Black Myth Wukong Development Journey
Game Science Origins
The Birth of a Studio
Game Science was founded in 2014 in Shenzhen, China. Its core team, including co-founder Feng Ji, came from Tencent Games, where they had worked on a successful online game called Asura. This was a multiplayer game deeply inspired by Chinese mythology, particularly the classic novel Journey to the West.
Despite their success in the massive multiplayer online (MMO) space, the founders felt a creative pull toward something different. They wanted to break away from the dominant free-to-play, service-based model that saturated the Chinese market. They envisioned a studio dedicated to crafting high-quality, premium games with a strong narrative focus.
Their first few projects were smaller in scale but helped build the studio's foundation. They released mobile games like 100 Heroes and the real-time strategy game Art of War: Red Tides. These games gave the team valuable experience in running an independent studio and honing their development skills, but they were stepping stones toward a much larger ambition.
A New Direction
By 2017, the team felt ready to tackle a major project. They decided to pivot dramatically from mobile and multiplayer games to a large-scale, single-player action RPG. This was a bold move, especially in a market that heavily favored online games with continuous revenue streams. Their goal was to create a console-quality title that could compete on the global stage.
The studio's leadership recognized a growing appetite among players for premium, self-contained experiences. They wanted to make the kind of game they themselves wanted to play: a deep, challenging, and visually stunning adventure.
For inspiration, they returned to a familiar source: Journey to the West. The 16th-century novel is one of the cornerstones of Chinese literature, a vast epic filled with gods, demons, and moral allegories. The team saw an opportunity to present this well-known story in a new, darker, and more mature light. They wanted to explore the complexities of its hero, the Monkey King Sun Wukong, and build a world that felt both ancient and fresh.
This decision set the stage for Black Myth: Wukong. The studio relocated to Hangzhou to focus entirely on this ambitious new project, pouring its collective experience and passion into bringing a legendary tale to life for a new generation of players worldwide.
