Bilsem Exam Overview

What Is the Bilsem Exam?

The Bilsem exam is a special test used in Turkey to find children with high potential in general mental ability, art, or music. It's not a test you can study for in the traditional sense. Instead of checking what a child has memorized from school, it looks at how they think and solve problems.

The goal is to identify gifted and talented students early on. Those who are identified can get extra support and attend special programs at Science and Art Centers (Bilim ve Sanat Merkezleri) to help them develop their unique abilities.

Exam Structure and Format

For 1st graders, the first stage of the Bilsem exam is a group screening test. It's usually done on a tablet to make it more engaging and accessible for young children. The format is designed to feel more like a game or a series of puzzles than a formal test.

This first step helps filter a large number of students. Children who perform well on the tablet-based screening are then invited for a more detailed, one-on-one assessment to further evaluate their specific talents.

Types of Questions

The questions in the 1st-grade screening test are visual and don't require reading or writing. They are designed to assess a child's reasoning and problem-solving skills. The format is simple and intuitive, often using familiar question types.

Question TypeDescription
Multiple-ChoiceA child sees a pattern or a sequence with a missing piece and must choose the correct option from a few choices to complete it.
True/FalseA statement is made through pictures, and the child decides if it's correct. For example, 'Does this shape fit into that space?'
One-Word AnswerThis is less common for 1st graders but might involve identifying the one image that doesn't belong in a group.

Think of the questions as brain-teasers. They test logic, pattern recognition, and imagination, not knowledge from a textbook.

Understanding these formats is the first step toward preparation. It's not about drilling practice questions but about encouraging a child's natural curiosity and problem-solving abilities through puzzles, games, and creative activities.
