Meet the Piano
Welcome to the piano! It's an amazing instrument with a lot of keys, but don't worry, it's easier to understand than it looks. The keys are your way of making music. When you press a key, a little hammer inside the piano hits a string, and that's what makes the sound you hear.
Think of the keyboard as a map. Once you learn the landmarks, you'll never get lost. Let's start with the most obvious pattern: the black keys.
Finding Your Way Around
Look closely at the black keys. You'll notice they come in groups of two, then a group of three, then a group of two, and so on, all the way up and down the piano.
This pattern is your secret guide! It helps you find any note you want. The most important note to find first is C.
To find any C on the keyboard, just find a group of two black keys. The white key immediately to the left of that group is C. Try to find all the C's on your piano!
Once you find C, you can name all the other white keys. The notes of the musical alphabet are A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. After G, the pattern starts over again with A. So, the keys to the right of C are D, E, F, G, and so on.
The white key to the left of the two black keys is always C.
The black keys are called sharps and flats. For example, the black key between C and D can be called C-sharp or D-flat. You'll learn more about these later.
What Do the Pedals Do?
Down by your feet, you'll see pedals. Most pianos have three. They change the sound of the notes you play.
The pedal on the far right is the sustain pedal. When you hold it down, any note you play will keep ringing out, even after you lift your finger off the key. It makes the music sound smooth and connected.
The pedal on the far left is the soft pedal. Pressing this one makes the music much quieter. It's useful for playing gentle or calm parts of a song.
The middle pedal is called the sostenuto pedal. It does something a little more tricky, and beginners don't use it very often. For now, you can focus on getting to know the right and left pedals.
