Arithmetic operators are the symbols we use for basic math. They're the tools for combining, separating, and grouping numbers. Think of them as the verbs of mathematics—they tell us what action to perform. The five most common operators are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and modulus.
Basic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are the cornerstones of all mathematical concepts.

Addition and Subtraction
Addition combines numbers. We use the plus sign (+) to show it. If you have 3 apples and get 2 more, you add them together to find the total.
Subtraction does the opposite; it finds the difference between numbers. We use the minus sign (-) for this. If you start with 5 apples and eat 2, you subtract to see how many are left.
These two are inverse operations. One undoes the other, a simple but powerful relationship.
Multiplication and Division
Multiplication is really just repeated addition. When you need to add the same number multiple times, you multiply. The symbol is an asterisk (*), though you might also see a cross (×) or a dot (⋅). Let's say you have 4 groups of 3 apples. Instead of writing $3 + 3 + 3 + 3$, you can just multiply.
Division is the inverse of multiplication. It tells you how many times one number fits into another, or splits a number into equal groups. The symbol is a forward slash (/). If you have 12 apples and want to split them among 4 friends, you divide.
Each friend gets 3 apples. Division helps us share things fairly.
Finding the Remainder

Sometimes, division doesn't work out perfectly. That's where the modulus operator comes in. It gives you the remainder left over after division. The symbol is the percent sign (%).
Imagine you have 14 apples and want to put them into boxes that hold 4 apples each. You can fill 3 full boxes, but what's left?
You'd have 2 apples left over. The modulus is incredibly useful for seeing if a number is even or odd. Any number modulus 2 will be 0 if it's even and 1 if it's odd. It's also used for tasks that need to cycle, like figuring out the day of the week a month from now.
