Opening Unreal Engine for the first time feels like stepping into a high-tech workshop. There are tools and panels everywhere, but don't worry. You only need to know a few key areas to get started.
The large, central window is the Viewport. This is your window into the 3D world you're building. It's where you'll see your architectural model come to life.
To the right, you'll find the World Outliner. Think of this as a detailed inventory list of every single object in your scene, from walls and windows to furniture and lights. Selecting an item here will highlight it in the Viewport.
Below the Outliner is the Details panel. When you select an object, this panel shows all of its specific properties, like its location, rotation, and size. This is where you'll make precise adjustments.
Finally, at the bottom, is the Content Drawer. This is your library of assets. It holds all the building blocks for your project: 3D models, textures, and other files you'll import and use.
Getting Around
Before you can build, you need to be able to move. Navigating in the 3D Viewport is like playing a video game. It's intuitive once you get the hang of it.
The primary way to look around is by clicking and dragging the right mouse button. This lets you pivot your view, like turning your head. To move through the space, hold down the right mouse button and use the W, A, S, and D keys, just like in many games. W moves you forward, S moves you backward, A moves left, and D moves right. You can also use Q and E to move straight down or up.

Starting a New Project
Every great design starts with a blank page, or in this case, a new project. When you launch Unreal Engine, you'll be greeted by the Project Browser. This is where you choose a template for your work.
For architectural visualization, Unreal offers specific templates under the 'Architecture, Engineering, and Construction' category. These templates come pre-loaded with settings and assets that are helpful for this kind of work, like realistic lighting setups. Starting with a template saves you time and sets you up for success.
Select a template, give your project a name, choose a location to save it, and click 'Create'. The engine will then build your new digital workspace.
Basic Tools
Once you have objects in your scene, you'll need to manipulate them. Unreal Engine provides three essential tools for this, known as the Transform Tools. You can find them in the upper-left corner of the Viewport.
- Move (W key): This tool lets you reposition objects along the X, Y, and Z axes.
- Rotate (E key): Use this to change the orientation of an object.
- Scale (R key): This tool allows you to resize objects, making them larger or smaller.
When you select an object with one of these tools active, a 'gizmo' appears. This visual guide of colored arrows or rings makes it easy to manipulate the object precisely in 3D space.
