Introduction to Architecture Roles
The Architectural Team
In the world of technology, the term "architect" isn't a one-size-fits-all title. It describes a set of roles that look at technology from different altitudes, from a 30,000-foot strategic view down to the nuts and bolts of a specific project. Understanding these roles—Enterprise, System, and Solution Architecture—is key to seeing how a company's technology vision becomes a reality.
Enterprise Architecture
Enterprise Architects have the widest scope. They look at the entire organization and figure out how technology can best support its long-term business goals. Think of them as city planners. A city planner doesn't design individual houses, but they create the master plan for the whole city, deciding where to put highways, residential zones, and industrial parks.
Similarly, an Enterprise Architect sets the high-level standards, principles, and technology roadmaps for the whole company. They make sure that all the different parts of the business are building technology that works together, avoids duplication, and aligns with the company's future direction.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Aligning IT strategy with business goals.
- Creating and maintaining the organization's technology standards and policies.
- Managing the portfolio of technologies used across the company.
- Identifying opportunities for innovation and efficiency.
System Architecture
System Architects operate at a more focused level. They are responsible for the high-level design of a specific, complex system. If the Enterprise Architect is the city planner, the System Architect is the one who designs an entire university campus or a hospital complex within that city.
They don't design every single room, but they map out the overall structure of the campus—how the main buildings connect, where the central utilities run, and how traffic flows between them. A System Architect defines the major components of a system, their interfaces, and how they interact. They take the rules set by the Enterprise Architect and apply them to build a large, cohesive platform or product.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Designing the overall structure of a specific software or hardware system.
- Defining system components, modules, and interfaces.
- Ensuring the system meets non-functional requirements like performance, security, and scalability.
- Making key technical decisions for the system's development.
Solution Architecture
Solution Architects are the most hands-on of the group. Their job is to design a solution for a specific business problem. This often involves selecting and combining different technologies or systems—both new and existing—to meet a particular need.
Continuing our analogy, the Solution Architect is the architect who designs a single building, like the campus library. They must follow the city's zoning laws (from the Enterprise Architect) and fit within the campus master plan (from the System Architect). But their primary focus is creating a functional building that serves the specific needs of students and faculty. They translate business requirements into a concrete technical solution.
A solution architect ensures that IT activities are in line with overarching business objectives by acting as the connecting element between technology solutions and business requirements.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Analyzing business requirements and translating them into a technical design.
- Selecting the right technologies and platforms for a specific project.
- Overseeing the development and implementation of the solution.
- Addressing the technical risks and challenges of a project.
How They Work Together
These three roles are not isolated; they form a hierarchy of strategic planning and execution. Enterprise Architects create the vision, System Architects design the foundational platforms that enable that vision, and Solution Architects build specific applications on those platforms to solve immediate business problems.
The flow is generally top-down. The Enterprise Architect's standards guide the System Architect, whose system design provides the platform for the Solution Architect. This structure ensures that even though different teams are solving different problems, the organization's technology landscape remains coherent, scalable, and aligned with its core mission.
