Absolutely. That's the key. One study could have a dozen rows. One row might be: Study 3, Preparation Phase, Inner Context: Leadership, Finding: 'The hospital director championed the project.' Another row for that same study could be: Study 3, Implementation Phase, Outer Context/Policy: Funding Mandate, Finding: 'The state grant required quarterly reporting, which strained resources.'

Okay, that makes sense. We're deconstructing the article into its EPIS components. But what about the qualitative studies? The ones that are all interviews and rich, narrative themes. It's not as clean as pulling a number. How do you synthesize a theme into a table cell?

That's the art of it. You don't just copy-paste a quote. You synthesize. If a study's theme is 'Clinician resistance due to perceived workflow disruption,' you categorize it. That fits under the Implementation phase, Inner Context, and maybe the 'Staffing' or 'Organizational Culture' sub-code. Your 'Key Finding' in the table would be a concise summary: 'Clinicians reported resistance, citing increased workload.' You maintain the essence but structure it within the framework.

So the goal of the table is to line up all these findings from different studies, so we can start seeing patterns. Like looking at a huge spreadsheet and suddenly noticing that every study that mentioned a specific 'Financing Policy' also reported challenges in the 'Sustainment' phase.

Exactly! That's the synthesis. You're no longer thinking about individual studies. You're thinking about the conversation across all the studies. You can start to aggregate those policy-level findings. You can say, 'Across twelve studies, the presence of short-term grant funding—a policy variable—was consistently linked to difficulties in long-term sustainment.'

And this is where visualizing the data could come in, right? You could literally map it out.

Yes. It's incredibly powerful. You can create flow diagrams showing how an outer context policy, like a new piece of legislation, influenced the Preparation phase, which then had knock-on effects on the Implementation phase. You can visually represent those phase transitions and show how a single factor can ripple through the entire EPIS timeline.

So a simple table becomes a map of the entire research landscape on a topic. And the most important thing, I guess, is to not lose the link between the context and the phase. A 'leadership' finding means something very different in Exploration than it does in Sustainment.

That is the core principle. You have to maintain that link. The table structure forces you to. You can't just list 'strong leadership' as a factor. It has to be 'strong leadership (Inner Context) during the Preparation phase led to secured resources.' The context and phase give the finding its meaning. Without them, it's just a floating, unhelpful fact.

So the extraction table isn't just an organizing tool. It's... it's the machine that turns a pile of separate articles into a single, coherent story.

It's the loom that weaves the individual threads together. And when you're done, you have a tapestry that shows you the big picture—how policy, and context, and people all interact over time to make implementation succeed or fail.
