Ratios as Comparisons

A ratio is simply a way to compare two numbers. Think of it as a relationship. If a cake recipe calls for 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of sugar, the ratio of flour to sugar is 2 to 1. This is a 'part-to-part' comparison, relating one ingredient to another.

You could also compare one part to the whole. With 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of sugar, the total mixture is 3 cups. The ratio of flour to the total mixture is 2 to 3. This is a 'part-to-whole' comparison. Ratios can be written with a colon (2:1), the word 'to' (2 to 1), or as a fraction (2/1).

A rate is a special kind of ratio used to compare two different kinds of quantities. Speed, for example, is a rate that compares distance to time, like 60 miles per hour. When you convert currency, you use an exchange rate to compare the value of one currency to another.

The more students can understand how this is all about relating quantities, the more they can appreciate why we talk about the real-world examples that we use.

Proportional Relationships

Things get interesting when we have two ratios that are equivalent. This is called a proportion. If you double the cake recipe, you'll use 4 cups of flour and 2 cups of sugar. The ratio is now 4:2, which is the same as the original 2:1. The relationship between the ingredients hasn't changed; they've scaled proportionally.

A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal. This is the foundation for solving problems where you need to scale something up or down while keeping the relationships consistent.

For example, if you know that $100 is worth £80, you can set up a proportion to figure out how many pounds you'd get for $250. You're trying to find an unknown value, but you know the relationship, or rate, must stay the same.

Solving for the Unknown

To make comparisons easier, we often use a unit rate. A unit rate is a rate where the second quantity is just 1. Instead of saying a car travels 150 miles in 3 hours, it's more useful to say it travels 50 miles per hour. Finding the unit rate simplifies the relationship to its most basic form.

When you have a proportion with an unknown value, the most direct way to solve it is with cross-multiplication. It's a reliable tool for finding the missing piece of the puzzle.

Let's use the currency example. We want to find how many pounds (£) are equivalent to $250. We know the rate is $100 to £80. Let 'x' be the unknown number of pounds. The proportion looks like this:

100 dollars80 pounds=250 dollarsx pounds\frac{100 \text{ dollars}}{80 \text{ pounds}} = \frac{250 \text{ dollars}}{x \text{ pounds}}

Now, we cross-multiply:

100×x=80×250100 \times x = 80 \times 250 100x=20000100x = 20000

To solve for xx, we divide both sides by 100:

x=20000100x = \frac{20000}{100} x=200x = 200

So, $250 is equivalent to £200. This method works for any proportional relationship, from scaling a recipe to interpreting a blueprint where a is used.

This visualises how proportionality maintains the core 'shape' or relationship of something, even as its size changes.
