The Logic of the Balanced List
Earning your is not just about racking up a certain number of units or passing exams. It is about proving you have a well-rounded education. Think of your subject selection like a balanced diet; if you only eat protein and never touch a vegetable, you might be strong, but you won't be healthy.
To ensure this balance, the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) organises all senior secondary subjects into two primary buckets: List A and List B. You cannot simply stay in your comfort zone by picking six science subjects or six arts subjects. To graduate, you must complete at least one pair of units from List A and one pair of units from List B in your final year.

Strategy in Subject Selection
When planning your Years 11 and 12, the trick is to satisfy these requirements without feeling like you are 'wasting' a slot on a subject you don't enjoy. Let's look at a typical scenario.
Imagine Sarah. Sarah loves biology and wants to be a nurse. Naturally, she picks Biology, Chemistry, and Human Biology (all List B). To balance her list, she also selects English (List A), which is actually a mandatory requirement for most students anyway. Because she needs more units, she rounds out her schedule with Psychology (List A) and Mathematics Methods (List B).
Sarah has hit her targets: she has plenty of STEM for her career path, but she satisfies the requirement by including English and Psychology.
Selecting the right mix early prevents a last-minute scramble in Year 12. If you find yourself heavily weighted toward one side, look for an elective in the other list that complements your interests.
