Amazon Advertising Basics

Advertising on Amazon

Amazon is more than just a massive online store; it's also a powerful advertising platform. Sellers can pay to feature their products more prominently, reaching customers who are already searching for things to buy. This direct access to active shoppers makes it a unique and effective place to advertise.

The core of Amazon's advertising is a pay-per-click (PPC) model. This means you only pay when a shopper actually clicks on your ad.

Amazon PPC is an advertising model where sellers bid on specific keywords to have their products appear at the top of search results pages.

When a customer searches for a product, Amazon runs a lightning-fast auction to decide which ads to show. It considers how much a seller is willing to bid for a click and how relevant their product is to the search. The winners of this auction get their ads placed in prime spots, like the top of the search results.

The Main Ad Types

Amazon offers several types of ads, but most sellers start with three core options: Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, and Sponsored Display. Each one serves a different purpose and appears in different places across the site.

First up are Sponsored Products. These are the most common ads you'll see on Amazon. They promote a single product listing and appear directly within search results and on other product pages. They blend in well with the regular, non-sponsored results, usually only marked by a small "Sponsored" tag.

Think of Sponsored Products as paying for a promotional spot on the digital shelf, placing your item exactly where interested shoppers will see it.

Next are Sponsored Brands. These ads are designed to build brand awareness. Instead of promoting just one item, a Sponsored Brands ad showcases your brand logo, a custom headline, and a collection of up to three products. They typically appear as a banner at the very top of search results, giving your brand a prominent, attention-grabbing spot.

This is a great option for launching a new product line or helping shoppers discover your brand's full range of offerings.

Finally, there are Sponsored Display ads. Unlike the other two types, which are tied to keyword searches, these ads target shoppers based on their interests and past shopping behavior. This means your ad can appear not just on Amazon, but also on third-party websites and apps that are part of Amazon's display network. They can show up on a competitor's product page or follow a shopper who viewed your product but didn't buy it.

Putting It All Together

A good advertising strategy often uses a mix of these ad types. You might use Sponsored Products to drive sales for your best-sellers, a Sponsored Brands campaign to introduce your new spring collection, and Sponsored Display ads to remind customers who visited your page to come back and make a purchase.

By understanding the role of each ad type, you can build a comprehensive approach that meets shoppers at different stages of their buying journey, from initial discovery to the final click to buy. These foundational tools are the first step to growing your presence on one of the world's largest marketplaces.
