Letters in Math?

You're used to seeing numbers in math. But what happens when you see a letter, like xx or aa?

Think of it like a placeholder. Imagine you have a box. You know something is inside, but you don't know what it is or how many. In algebra, a letter is like that box. It holds the place for a number we haven't figured out yet.

A symbol, usually a letter, that represents a value that can change or is unknown.

Any letter can be a variable. You'll often see xx, yy, and zz, but it could be aa, bb, cc, or even a letter that stands for something specific, like tt for time or dd for distance.

The key idea is that a variable stands in for a number. Its value isn't fixed—it can vary.

Building with Variables

Variables allow us to write mathematical phrases, called expressions, even when we don't know all the numbers. For instance, if you have a certain number of cookies and a friend gives you three more, how many do you have?

We can't say the exact number because we don't know how many you started with. But we can describe the situation. If we let cc stand for your original number of cookies, the new amount is:

c+3c + 3

This is an algebraic expression. It's a combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation. It doesn't give us a final answer, but it perfectly describes the situation.

We can also use variables to create full mathematical sentences, called equations. An equation shows that two expressions are equal. It has an equals sign.

Let's go back to the cookies. Suppose after your friend gives you 3, you have a total of 12 cookies. We can write this as an equation:

c+3=12c + 3 = 12

This equation makes a statement: "the unknown number of cookies you started with, plus three more, is equal to twelve." Now, we have a puzzle to solve. The variable cc isn't just a placeholder; it's a specific unknown number we can find.

You'll learn how to solve these puzzles later. For now, the important thing is understanding how letters can act as stand-ins for numbers, allowing us to build expressions and equations that describe the world around us.
