Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
What Is AI?
Artificial intelligence is the science of making machines that can think or act intelligently. The goal is to create systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, like learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and understanding language.
At its core, AI is about automating intellectual tasks that we usually associate with the human mind.
Think of it this way: for centuries, we've built machines to automate physical labor, from the water wheel to the factory assembly line. AI is the next step in that journey, but for mental labor. Instead of lifting heavy objects, it might analyze complex data or recognize a face in a photo. The field is broad and constantly changing, but this central idea of simulating human intelligence remains the same.
A Brief History
The idea of artificial minds has been around for centuries in myths and stories, but the scientific field of AI is much younger. It officially began in the summer of 1956 at a workshop at Dartmouth College. A small group of mathematicians and scientists gathered to explore the idea that every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence could be so precisely described that a machine could be made to simulate it.
The years that followed were filled with excitement and big promises. Early programs could solve algebra problems and prove theorems in logic. But the initial optimism soon hit a wall. The real world turned out to be far more complex than the simple problems these early AIs could handle. A lack of computing power and data led to periods known as "AI winters," when funding dried up and progress slowed.
Everything changed in the 21st century. The explosion of the internet created massive amounts of data, and computer processors became exponentially more powerful. These two ingredients, big data and powerful hardware, fueled the rise of a new approach called machine learning, breathing new life into the field and leading to the rapid advances we see today.
Two Kinds of AI
When people talk about AI, they are often talking about one of two very different concepts: narrow AI or general AI.
Artificial Narrow Intelligence

Also known as Weak AI, it is a type of artificial intelligence that is trained to perform a specific, limited task. ANI operates within a pre-defined range and cannot perform tasks beyond its field.
All the AI we use today is narrow AI. It's incredibly good at one thing. An AI that can beat the world's best chess player cannot also write an email or recognize a song. A navigation app can find the fastest route to your destination, but it can't tell you a joke. These systems are specialists, highly optimized for a single purpose.
Artificial General Intelligence

Also known as Strong AI, it is a theoretical form of artificial intelligence where a machine would have an intelligence equal to humans. It would have a self-aware consciousness and the ability to solve problems, learn, and plan for the future.
Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, is the stuff of science fiction. It's the idea of a machine with the flexibility, creativity, and general understanding of the world that humans possess. An AGI wouldn't need to be programmed for a specific task; it could learn to do almost anything. While it's a major goal for many AI researchers, AGI does not yet exist. Building one remains one of the greatest challenges in science.
