To build AI systems we can trust, developers and policymakers focus on a few core principles. These aren't just abstract ideas; they are practical goals that guide how AI is created and managed. The most common are fairness, transparency, privacy, and accountability.

Let’s look at what each of these means in practice.

Fairness is about preventing AI systems from making prejudiced decisions. AI learns from data, and if that data reflects existing societal biases, the AI will learn those biases too. For example, if a hiring tool is trained on historical data where men were hired for engineering roles more often, it might unfairly penalize female applicants, regardless of their qualifications. Ethical AI development requires strong safeguards to ensure personal data is collected responsibly, used only for its intended purpose, and kept secure from unauthorized access.

Accountability answers the question: who is responsible when an AI system makes a mistake? If a self-driving car causes an accident, is it the owner's fault, the manufacturer's, or the software developer's? Establishing clear lines of responsibility is crucial. It ensures that there are mechanisms for addressing harm and that people have a way to challenge an AI's decisions.
