The migration to SAP S/4HANA isn't a single, one-size-fits-all process. It's a major strategic decision with deep technical implications. The path you choose determines how you'll handle decades of historical data, custom code, and established business processes. Three primary strategies exist: starting fresh with a Greenfield implementation, upgrading your existing system in a Brownfield conversion, or carving out a middle ground with a Selective Data Transition.

The Clean Slate vs. The Upgrade

The most fundamental choice is between a complete re-implementation (Greenfield) and a direct system conversion (Brownfield). A Greenfield approach is like building a new house. You get to design everything from the ground up, adopting standard S/4HANA processes and shedding years of accumulated from your old system. The Hybrid Approach

For many organizations, neither extreme is a perfect fit. This is where Selective Data Transition (SDT) comes in. It offers a hybrid model that combines the benefits of both approaches. You get a clean, standardized S/4HANA system, but you can strategically migrate specific data from your legacy environment.

This is often accomplished through an approach called Shell Creation. The process involves creating a 'shell' of the legacy production system in a new S/4HANA environment. This shell contains all the configuration and custom code, but no master or transactional data. From there, you selectively load the data you need.
