With standard options, like those with 45 days to expiration (DTE), time moves slowly. Theta decay is a gradual erosion of premium, and Delta shifts in a relatively predictable way with the underlying asset. The 0DTE environment is completely different. Here, hours and even minutes matter more than days. The familiar physics of options trading warp under intense time compression.
As an option approaches its final moments, its sensitivity to price changes doesn't just increase; it accelerates. This isn't a linear progression. An out-of-the-money (OTM) option that seemed safe an hour ago can suddenly behave like an at-the-money (ATM) option with a tiny move in the S&P 500 Index (SPX). This hyper-sensitivity is driven by one of the Greeks in particular: Gamma.
Gamma's Final Act
Gamma measures the rate of change of an option's Delta. Think of Delta as the option's speed and Gamma as its acceleration. For a 45-DTE option, Gamma is low. A $1 move in the SPX might nudge Delta from 0.20 to 0.22. In the final hour of a 0DTE option's life, that same $1 move could cause Delta to jump from 0.20 to 0.40, or even higher. This explosive change is known as a and is the central risk—and opportunity—of 0DTE trading.
Gamma is highest for at-the-money options nearest to expiration. For 0DTE options, even strikes that are slightly out-of-the-money can experience extreme Gamma.
This leads to the core conflict of 0DTE strategies: the Gamma-Theta trade-off. Traders are attracted to selling 0DTE options because Theta decay is at its absolute maximum. An option's time value evaporates incredibly quickly on its last day. However, this high reward comes with the immense risk of a Gamma spike. While you are collecting rapid premium decay, a small, adverse move in the SPX can cause your position's Delta to explode, leading to losses that far exceed the premium you collected.
Pin Risk and Mindset Shift
One of the most dangerous consequences of high Gamma is . This happens when the underlying asset's price hovers exactly on or very near a short option's strike price at expiration. Because Gamma is so high, the option's Delta will flicker between nearly 0 (if OTM) and nearly 1.0 (if ITM).
The trader is left guessing whether they will be assigned the underlying shares or futures contract. This uncertainty can wreck a portfolio, as you might end up with an unplanned long or short position over a weekend, exposed to gap risk.
This is why trading 0DTE contracts requires a fundamentally different approach than trading longer-dated options. It's not about setting up a position based on long-term probabilities and letting Theta work for you. It's a game of active, intraday risk management. Many successful 0DTE traders engage in what is called "gamma scalping"—constantly adjusting their position by trading the underlying asset to keep their overall Delta neutral as Gamma causes it to shift.
Gamma is crucial in delta neutral SPX options trading because a sudden move in the SPX can tip your delta out of neutrality quickly.
The focus shifts from predicting direction to managing sensitivity. While a 45-DTE trader worries about where the price will be in a month, a 0DTE trader is obsessed with how fast their position's risk profile will change in the next five minutes.
