By controlling where and how the layers connect, weavers can achieve fascinating effects. To add even more substance, weavers can introduce or stuffer yarns. These are extra threads laid between the primary fabric layers. Unlike the structural warp and weft, their job isn't to create the fabric itself, but to add bulk, weight, and thermal resistance. Stuffer yarns are typically thick, low-twist yarns that lie straight between the layers, while wadding consists of a whole sheet of fibrous material. These yarns remain hidden, but their effect on the fabric's final properties is immense.
This technique is critical for performance textiles. By using a durable, weather-resistant yarn for the outer layer and a soft, comfortable yarn for the inner layer, with insulating stuffer yarns in between, a weaver can construct a single fabric with the properties of a complex, multi-part garment.
The applications are diverse. In high-end outerwear, a double cloth with an insulating stuffer yarn provides warmth without the bulk of a quilted jacket. For industrial purposes, multi-layer fabrics can be engineered for soundproofing or as stable, reinforced partitions. The ability to customize each layer and the connections between them gives designers enormous control over the final textile's performance and aesthetics.
