Advanced Periodization Models
Beyond Linear Models
For elite athletes, steady, linear progress eventually stalls. The body adapts, and gains become harder to achieve. To break through these plateaus, training needs to become more strategic. Advanced periodization models move beyond simply adding weight to the bar week after week. They involve deliberately manipulating training variables to elicit specific adaptations, manage fatigue, and peak for competition.
Block periodization utilizes highly concentrated training blocks (mesocycles) focusing on specific fitness qualities with minimal interference between competing adaptations.
Instead of trying to improve everything at once, you dedicate a 2-4 week mesocycle, or “block,” to a primary goal. For a CrossFit athlete, this might mean a strength block focused on heavy lifting, followed by a power block centered on Olympic lifts, and then a metabolic conditioning block to sharpen endurance. During any given block, other skills aren't ignored, they're just maintained with lower volume while the primary quality is pushed hard. This focused approach minimizes the interference effect, where competing demands for strength and endurance can limit progress in both.
A microcycle within a strength block might schedule heavy back squats on Monday, heavy pressing on Tuesday, and heavy deadlifts on Thursday, with the rest of the week dedicated to skill work, accessory movements, and active recovery.
Daily and Weekly Undulation
Undulating periodization varies the training focus much more frequently, either daily (DUP) or weekly (WUP). This model keeps the body constantly adapting by never letting it get too comfortable with one type of stimulus.
By regularly changing the training stimulus, undulating periodization keeps your body guessing and adapting, leading to greater and more consistent gains.
A CrossFit athlete using DUP wouldn't have a “strength week.” Instead, their week might look like this:
- Monday: Max strength (e.g., heavy 3-rep max back squat) and a short, intense metcon.
- Wednesday: Power and speed (e.g., snatch complexes, box jumps) with a moderate-length workout.
- Friday: Muscular endurance and volume (e.g., high-rep squats, gymnastics capacity work) and a long chipper.
This approach allows an athlete to train multiple qualities concurrently. The frequent variation can also help manage fatigue, as a high-intensity day is naturally followed by sessions with different demands, preventing the cumulative stress of repeated heavy days.
The Conjugate System
Popularized by Westside Barbell, the conjugate system is a form of undulating periodization built around developing multiple qualities at once. It’s structured around four main training days, which can be adapted for the demands of CrossFit.

The key to the conjugate system is variation. The max effort lift is rotated every 1-3 weeks to avoid accommodation and continuously present a new stimulus. After the main lift, athletes perform a high volume of accessory exercises to build muscle, address weaknesses, and prevent injury. CrossFit-specific conditioning and skill work are typically added after these core lifting sessions.
The conjugate method's blend of maximal strength, speed work, and high-volume accessory training is highly effective for building well-rounded strength that transfers to the varied demands of CrossFit.
Managing Recovery
No periodization model works without proper fatigue management. Elite programs must intentionally schedule recovery. This goes beyond just taking rest days. Deload weeks, where volume and intensity are significantly reduced, should be planned at the end of each mesocycle, typically every 4-6 weeks.
Monitoring athlete feedback is crucial. Subjective measures like mood, sleep quality, and motivation are just as important as objective data like heart rate variability. If an athlete is consistently run down, the program must be adjusted. The goal is to apply just enough stress to drive adaptation, not to run the athlete into the ground.
