When faced with a long, intimidating medical term, don't read it from left to right. The key is to start at the end. The suffix dictates the word's fundamental meaning, telling you if it's a condition, a procedure, a disorder, or a specialist.

By identifying the suffix first, you establish a frame of reference. Then you move leftward, piece by piece, to fill in the details provided by the roots and prefixes. This turns deconstruction into a logical process, not a guessing game.

Following the suffix-first rule:

  1. -pathy: We start here. This suffix means 'disease' or 'disorder'. So, we know we're dealing with a disease.
  2. encephal/o: Moving left, we find the root for 'brain'. Now we have 'disease of the brain'.
  3. leuk/o: The final piece is the root for 'white'.
