The Binder's Dilemma

In case binding, the choice of adhesive is a decision between two trusted standards: Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) and wheat paste. Each has a distinct personality and purpose. PVA is the modern workhorse. It's a synthetic polymer adhesive that creates a strong, flexible, and permanent bond once it dries. It grabs quickly and is largely irreversible, making it ideal for structural elements that need to last.

Wheat paste, on the other hand, is a traditional, starch-based adhesive. Its greatest strengths are its long open time—giving you more room to position materials—and its reversibility. A little moisture can soften the bond, allowing for repairs. This makes it a favorite in conservation and for tasks where adjustments might be needed. The trade-off is a slower drying time and a less aggressive initial tack.

Creating the Perfect Mix

You don't always have to choose one or the other. Experienced binders often create a custom mix to get the best of both worlds. By combining PVA with methyl cellulose or wheat paste, you can create what's often called a mix. This blend balances the quick tack and strength of PVA with the longer working time and better slip of a paste.

The ratio is everything. A mix heavy on PVA (say, 75/25) will give you a strong bond with a bit more open time than pure PVA. A mix with more paste will be more forgiving but take longer to set. This control is crucial for delicate operations like attaching endpapers, where you need a few moments to get the alignment just right without sacrificing the bond's integrity.

The Battle Against Moisture

The single biggest challenge when applying wet adhesives to paper is managing moisture. When paper fibers absorb water from glue, they swell. As they dry, they shrink unevenly, creating wrinkles and waves. This unwanted texture is known as and it's the bane of a binder's existence, especially during the process.

To minimize cockling, apply a thin, even layer of adhesive. Work from the center of the endpaper out towards the edges. This pushes air out and prevents the paper from stretching.

Speed and pressure are your allies. Once the adhesive is applied, work efficiently to join the endpaper to the board. Immediately place the book in a press between flat, clean boards. The even pressure prevents the paper from warping as the glue dries, forcing it to dry flat. Letting the book cure under pressure for several hours, or even overnight, is essential for a smooth, professional finish.
