Advanced Architectural Vocabulary

From Structure to Detail

You know the basic parts of a building. But to describe architecture with precision, you need words that capture not just what something is, but how it works. This means talking about how a structure supports itself and how its different parts meet and transition.

Take the forces pushing outward from a heavy roof or vaulted ceiling. A simple thick wall can handle it, but for more elegant solutions, architects developed specialized supports.

buttress

A structure of stone or brick built against a wall to strengthen or support it.

The classic buttress is a solid mass. But Gothic architects refined this into the flying buttress, an arch that leaps from the upper part of a wall to a heavy pier, leaving space below. This innovation allowed for thinner walls and vast stained-glass windows.

Sometimes, a structural element is more about visual effect than physical support. It mimics the form of a load-bearing column but is purely decorative.

pilaster

A rectangular column that projects partially from a wall, treated architecturally as a column. It is purely decorative.

The Language of the Facade

A building's facade, or face, is where it communicates with the world. The arrangement of its openings is one of its most expressive features. There's a specific term for this.

fenestration

The arrangement of windows and other exterior openings on a building.

Within the overall fenestration, the individual windows have their own anatomy. The pieces that divide the glass aren't just 'frames'. They have precise names.

Facades are also articulated with horizontal bands. Along the top of a wall, just under the roofline, you'll often find a decorative assembly called an entablature. This feature, inherited from classical temples, has its own distinct parts.

The top molding of an entablature is the cornice. The broad, often decorated, horizontal band below the cornice is the frieze. The cornice projects, protecting the frieze from rain.

Shaping Interior Space

Inside, advanced vocabulary often describes how ceilings are shaped and how light is brought into a space.

To illuminate the center of a large building, architects use a clever trick: an upper level of windows that rises above the adjoining roofs.

clerestory

The upper part of the nave, choir, and transepts of a large church, containing a series of windows. It is clear of the roofs of the aisles and admits light to the central parts of the building.

The ceilings in grand buildings are rarely flat. They are often vaulted. A barrel vault is a simple, continuous arch, like a tunnel. But when two barrel vaults intersect at a right angle, they form a more complex and efficient structure.

This is a groin vault. It directs the weight of the ceiling onto four corner piers, opening up the walls for, you guessed it, larger windows. And where you have large Gothic windows, you often have this decorative stonework.
