In high-performance carving, the transition phase is not a moment of neutrality. It’s an offensive, proactive setup for the next turn. The goal is to establish edge engagement before the skis even cross the fall line, transforming the top of the turn from a simple change of direction into the primary control point for the entire arc. This is a fundamental departure from conventional skiing, where the apex of the turn and maximum pressure often coincide with the fall line.
The strategy is to achieve the turn's apex before the fall line. By engaging the new outside ski's inside edge while the center of mass is still completing the previous arc, you activate the ski's sidecut at the earliest possible moment. This allows pressure to build progressively and smoothly, maximizing the ski's design and creating a powerful, efficient carve that generates acceleration out of the turn, rather than scrubbing speed.
Lower Leg Kinematics
Achieving this early engagement is driven by precise movements in the lower leg, specifically at the ankle. As the skis move from one set of edges to the other, a rapid and deliberate ankle roll is the first input. To initiate a left turn, the right ankle undergoes eversion (rolling inward) while the left ankle inverts (rolling outward). This action, independent of upper body rotation or hip angulation, directly tilts the skis onto their new edges.
This movement initiates the entire of the turn from the ground up. The ankle's roll is immediately transmitted through the stiff structure of the boot, engaging the ski's edge. This, in turn, facilitates the knee angulation and hip positioning required for a deep carve. The focus on ankle inversion and eversion ensures that tip engagement is immediate. The pressure is instantly directed to the shovel of the new outside ski, causing it to bite into the snow and pull the ski into its natural turn radius without any skidding or steering input.
Maximizing Pressure and Efficiency
Why engage so early? The primary benefit is maximizing the time the ski is carving on its geometry. By engaging the edge at the top of the turn, you begin building pressure against the ski much earlier in the arc. This creates a longer, more controlled period of pressure buildup, culminating in a powerful release of energy as you transition into the next turn. Achieving a high edge angle in the first third of the turn, well before the fall line, is the hallmark of this technique.
