Defining Health and Functional Status

More Than Not Being Sick

How do you define health? For many, it's simply the absence of sickness. If you don't have a cold and haven't broken any bones, you must be healthy. But this view is incomplete. Health is a much broader concept that touches every part of our lives.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

This definition is powerful because it shifts the focus from just treating illness to actively pursuing well-being. Let's break down its three key parts.

Physical well-being is what we most commonly associate with health. It refers to how your body functions. This includes everything from your energy levels and strength to the absence of pain and disease. It's about your body's ability to handle daily tasks and stresses.

Mental well-being involves your emotional and psychological state. It’s about feeling good, functioning well, and having the resilience to handle life's ups and downs. This doesn't mean you're happy all the time. It means you can manage your emotions, cope with stress, and maintain a positive outlook.

Social well-being is about your relationships and connections with others. It involves having a supportive network of family and friends, feeling a sense of belonging in your community, and engaging in meaningful social interactions. Humans are social creatures, and our connections are a vital part of our overall health.

Putting Health into Action

Knowing the components of health is one thing, but how do we measure it in a practical, day-to-day sense? This is where the concept of functional status comes in.

functional status

noun

An individual's ability to perform the normal daily activities required to meet basic needs, fulfill usual roles, and maintain health and well-being.

Think of functional status as your health in action. It's your ability to get out of bed, make breakfast, go to work or school, shop for groceries, and participate in hobbies. These activities are often called Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs).

A high functional status means you can navigate your world and take care of yourself without significant difficulty. It’s a direct reflection of your overall well-being. If your physical, mental, or social health declines, your ability to perform these daily tasks often suffers.

In short, functional status is the bridge between the idea of being healthy and the reality of living your life.
