Like Denominators

When we add fractions, we are combining parts of a whole. Imagine a pizza cut into equal slices: the bottom number, or , tells us how many equal pieces make up the whole, while the top number, the , counts how many of those pieces we actually have. Because the denominators are already identical, the pieces we are adding are the exact same size, meaning we can simply combine them directly.

Let's look at what happens when we add 14\frac{1}{4} and 14\frac{1}{4}. Since both fractions speak the same language of fourths, we add the numerators together while keeping the denominator exactly the same:

14+14=1+14=24\frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{4} = \frac{1 + 1}{4} = \frac{2}{4}

If you merge two quarter-slices of a pizza, you get two-fourths of the pizza, which is visually identical to exactly half of it. We can simplify this final result by dividing both the top and bottom by their common factor of 2, leaving us with 12\frac{1}{2}.
