Introduction to Actor-Network Theory
More Than Just People
Think about your morning coffee. What's involved? You, probably. But also the coffee beans, the grinder, the filter, the hot water, and the mug. We usually focus on the human in this story: you made coffee. But what if the grinder broke? What if you ran out of beans? Suddenly, these objects have a lot of power.
This is the starting point for Actor-Network Theory, or ANT. It’s a way of looking at the world that doesn't put humans at the center of every story. Instead, it sees a web of relationships where people, objects, ideas, and even microbes all play a part. It was developed in the 1980s by thinkers like Michel Callon, Bruno Latour, and John Law, who wanted to understand how science and technology actually happen.
In ANT, the world isn't divided into 'people' and 'things.' It's a single, complex network of actors working together.
To get this idea across, ANT uses a special term. Instead of 'actors,' which sounds like it's only for humans, it uses 'actants.' An actant is anything that makes a difference or modifies a state of affairs. Your coffee grinder is an actant. The electricity that powers it is an actant. You are an actant.

These actants don't exist in isolation. They are linked together in networks. A network, in this sense, isn’t just your friends on social media. It's the entire web of connections that creates a situation. For your morning coffee, the network includes the farmer who grew the beans, the company that roasted them, the pipes that carry your water, and the economic system that allows you to buy it all. To get a cup of coffee, this whole network must hold together.
A Level Playing Field
The most radical idea in ANT is the 'principle of generalized symmetry.' This just means we should use the same vocabulary to describe the contributions of both human and non-human actants. We don't assume humans are special or have unique intentions that things lack. We just look at what each actant does.
Instead of asking, "What did the person want to achieve?" we ask, "How did this network of actants come together to produce this effect?" The goal is to describe, not to explain away. We trace the connections without giving humans a head start.
A speed bump has no intentions or desires, but it is very effective at making drivers slow down. It's a powerful non-human actant in the network of traffic control.
Why does this matter? Because it helps us see the hidden forces that shape our world. We often blame people for failures or credit them for successes, ignoring the vital roles played by technology, infrastructure, or even nature. A new law (an idea actant) can change a society just as much as a charismatic leader (a human actant). A microbe (a non-human actant) can bring the global economy to a halt.
By treating all actants equally, ANT gives us a powerful lens to understand how change happens and how stability is maintained. It reveals that our social world is built and held together by a fragile, complex, and fascinating mix of people and their things.
