External Anatomy: The Vulva
What people often refer to as the vagina is actually the vulva, which is the correct term for the external female genitals. The vulva includes several parts, each with a specific role.
The most visible parts are the labia, which are folds of skin that protect the more sensitive structures underneath. The outer, larger folds are called the labia majora, or outer lips. They are typically covered with pubic hair after puberty and contain sweat and oil-secreting glands.
Inside the labia majora are the labia minora, or inner lips. These are smaller, hairless folds of skin that vary greatly in size, colour, and shape from person to person. They surround the openings to the urethra and the vagina.
Clitoris
noun
A highly sensitive sexual organ located at the front of the vulva where the labia minora meet. Most of its structure is internal.
The only visible part of the clitoris is the glans, a small nub of tissue that's protected by a fold of skin called the clitoral hood. However, this is just the tip. The clitoris extends internally, splitting into two 'legs', or crura, that can be several inches long. It is made of erectile tissue, similar to the penis, and becomes engorged with blood during arousal.
With thousands of nerve endings, the glans clitoris is extremely sensitive to touch, making it a key erogenous zone.
Internal Structures
Moving inward, we find the internal reproductive organs. These are responsible for menstruation, conception, and pregnancy.
The vagina is a muscular, elastic tube that connects the vulva to the cervix. It is typically about 3 to 4 inches long and has a soft, flexible lining with folds called rugae that allow it to expand. This expansion is important for both sexual intercourse and childbirth.
The walls of the vagina are rich in nerve endings, particularly the front wall in the first few inches, which can be a source of pleasure for some women.
The G-spot, or Gräfenberg spot, is a purported highly sensitive area on the anterior (front) wall of the vagina. While its existence is debated among researchers, many women report experiencing pleasure from stimulation in this region.
At the top of the vagina is the cervix, a narrow passage that forms the lower end of the uterus. The cervix has a small opening that allows sperm to enter the uterus and menstrual fluid to exit. It can also be a source of sexual pleasure when stimulated, often described as a 'deep' sensation.
Uterus
noun
A hollow, pear-shaped organ located in the female pelvis between the bladder and rectum. It's where a foetus develops and grows during pregnancy.
The uterus, or womb, is a powerful organ with thick, muscular walls. While not typically considered an erogenous zone in the same way as the clitoris or vagina, rhythmic pressure against the uterus during deep penetration can be pleasurable for some individuals.
What is the correct anatomical term for the external female genitals?
True or false: The only part of the clitoris is the small nub visible externally.
Understanding the different parts of female sexual anatomy can help demystify sexual response and pleasure. Each part plays a role, and sensitivity varies from person to person.
