Before DAWs, recording music required huge, expensive mixing consoles and tape machines in dedicated studios. Now, you can do almost everything from a single piece of software. It’s the central hub for capturing ideas, arranging them into a song, polishing the sound, and preparing it for listeners.

The Timeline (or Sequencer) is where you build your song from left to right, arranging audio clips and musical notes. The Mixer gives you control over the volume, stereo position (panning), and effects for every track. There are many DAWs on the market, each with its own strengths and workflows. While they all accomplish the same core tasks, some are favored for specific genres or styles of working. You don't need to know them all, but it's helpful to recognize the big names.
