The Building Blocks of Numbers

At the heart of math are numbers. We use them to count, measure, and understand the world. The simplest numbers we learn are the whole numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, and so on. They represent complete, single units, like three apples or ten chairs.

But what makes the number 532 different from 235? The secret is place value. Each digit in a number has a specific value based on its position. The digit's place tells you what power of 10 to multiply it by.

So, in 532, the '5' is in the hundreds place (500), the '3' is in the tens place (30), and the '2' is in the ones place (2). Understanding place value is the key to working with all kinds of numbers.

Working with Whole Numbers

Once we understand numbers, we can start doing things with them. The four basic operations of arithmetic are our main tools. They let us combine numbers in different ways.

For example, if you have 8 apples and get 5 more, you add them: 8+5=138 + 5 = 13. If you have 12 cookies and eat 3, you subtract: 123=912 - 3 = 9. Multiplication is for repeated addition, like finding the total cost of 4 items that each cost $5: 4×5=204 \times 5 = 20. Division splits things up, like sharing 20 candies among 4 friends: 20÷4=520 \div 4 = 5 candies each.

Beyond the Whole

Whole numbers are great, but they don't cover everything. What if you need to share a pizza between two people? You can't give each person a whole pizza. This is where fractions and decimals come in. They represent parts of a whole.

A fraction shows a part of a whole using two numbers separated by a line. Imagine a pizza cut into 8 equal slices. If you eat 3 slices, you've eaten three-eighths of the pizza.

Decimals are another way to write parts of a whole. They are based on the number 10. The dot, called a decimal point, separates the whole number part from the fractional part. The number 0.5 is a decimal that means the same thing as the fraction 12\frac{1}{2}.

Just like with whole numbers, place value is crucial for decimals. The first digit after the decimal point is the tenths place, the next is the hundredths place, and so on. So, in the number 12.34, the '3' represents three-tenths (310\frac{3}{10}) and the '4' represents four-hundredths (4100\frac{4}{100}).

Connecting Fractions and Decimals

Fractions and decimals are two sides of the same coin. You can easily switch between them.

To turn a fraction into a decimal, you just divide the numerator by the denominator. For the fraction 34\frac{3}{4}, you divide 3 by 4.

3÷4=0.753 \div 4 = 0.75. So, 34\frac{3}{4} is the same as 0.750.75.

To turn a decimal into a fraction, you use place value. Look at the last digit of the decimal. Its place value tells you the denominator. The number itself becomes the numerator. For the decimal 0.75, the last digit '5' is in the hundredths place. So the fraction is 75100\frac{75}{100}. You can then simplify this fraction by dividing the top and bottom by the same number. In this case, both are divisible by 25.

75÷25100÷25=34\frac{75 \div 25}{100 \div 25} = \frac{3}{4}

Knowing how to convert between them helps when you need to compare numbers. Which is bigger, 25\frac{2}{5} or 0.50.5? If we convert 25\frac{2}{5} to a decimal (2÷52 \div 5), we get 0.40.4. Now it's easy to see that 0.50.5 is bigger than 0.40.4. You can also perform all four basic operations on fractions and decimals, though the methods are a bit different for each.
