Efficient Cross Construction

The Downside-Up Cross

You already know how to build a cross on one face. The first major step toward faster solving is changing where you build it. Instead of solving the cross on the top face, we're going to build it on the bottom, or Down (D) face. Typically, this will be the white face.

Why the switch? Visibility. When you solve the cross on top, your hands and the pieces you're moving constantly obscure your view of the other layers. By building it on the bottom, the top two layers remain wide open. This allows you to track pieces for your next steps while you're still solving the cross. It’s the difference between looking at your feet while you walk and looking ahead to see where you're going.

Relative vs. Absolute

The beginner's instinct is to solve one edge piece at a time. You find the white-blue edge, bring it to the blue center, and then turn it down to match the white center. This is slow because it often requires rotating the entire cube to find the next piece and its matching center.

The key to an efficient cross is understanding relative positioning. The center pieces on a cube never change their positions relative to one another. Red is always opposite orange, and blue is always opposite green. You can use this fixed map to your advantage.

Instead of solving one edge at a time, you can place the white edge pieces in their correct positions relative to each other, even if they are not yet aligned with their corresponding side centers. For example, if you place the white-green edge next to the white-orange edge, you know they're correctly positioned relative to each other. Once all four edges are placed this way, a single D, D', or D2 move will align the entire cross with the centers simultaneously. This technique drastically reduces move count and eliminates unnecessary cube rotations.

This leads to a simple rule: every cross can be solved in eight moves or fewer. With practice, you'll begin to see the cross pattern in the scrambled cube and plan your entire sequence of moves before you even start turning. This skill is called 'inspection'.

Basic Cross Cases

There are three basic positions for any white edge piece you need to move to the bottom face.

Case 1: The edge piece is in the top layer. This is the easiest case. If the white sticker is facing up, simply rotate the top layer (U, U', or U2) to position the edge piece above its matching center and then do a double turn of that face (F2, R2, L2, or B2) to move it into the cross. If the white sticker is facing to the side, position the edge piece's other color over its matching center, then do a single turn (F, R, L, or B) to bring it down. The edge will be inserted correctly, but oriented incorrectly. We'll fix this in a moment.

Case 2: The edge piece is in the middle layer. To solve an edge from the middle layer, you can use a move like R or L' to bring it up to the top layer. Now it's a Case 1 piece. Solve it from there.

Case 3: The edge piece is in the bottom layer, but in the wrong spot or oriented incorrectly. Simply perform a double turn of that face (e.g., R2) to pop the piece up to the top layer without disturbing the other solved cross pieces. Now it is a Case 1 piece.

Notice a pattern? The goal is almost always to get the piece into the top layer first. From there, it can be inserted anywhere with just a few moves.

A common sub-case is an edge that is correctly placed but flipped the wrong way. The simplest fix is to bring it to the top with a move like F, move it out of the way with U, fix the face you just disturbed with F', and then re-insert the edge correctly.

The true skill is combining these simple cases. For example, while you insert one edge piece, you can use that same move to simultaneously move another edge piece into a more favorable position. This is the beginning of advanced, fluid motion where every turn accomplishes multiple goals.
