Unit Overview & Target Vocabulary

In this foundational unit, students learn to think like professional engineers. They shift away from standard science experiments (which test a hypothesis to explain a natural phenomenon) and instead focus on solving a specific, human-centered problem within clear limits. Students learn that failure is not a grade, but rather vital scientific data used to improve a design.

Criteria: The requirements or goals that a successful design must meet to solve the problem.
Constraints: The limitations or rules that restrict the design team (e.g., time, materials, budget).
Prototype: A rapid, preliminary physical model built to test a design concept.
Design Flaw: A weak point or failure in a prototype that reveals where the design must be modified.
Iteration: The process of testing, analyzing data, making improvements, and testing again.

Structural Collapse and Mechanical Failures: Students observe how load-bearing structures react under vertical forces. They investigate how forces are distributed across different shapes (cylinders, triangles, flat planes) and why structures buckle, twist, or collapse.

This unit culminates in a multi-day hands-on challenge where student design teams must build a physical shelter to protect a delicate tomato (represented by a cherry tomato or a small ball of soft red clay) from falling weather debris (represented by a golf ball or wooden block dropped from a height of 30 cm).

The Scenario: Students examine how a burdock seed clings to fur (inspiration for Velcro), how a woodpecker's skull protects its brain from high-impact concussions (inspiration for bicycle helmets), or how a beaver's flat, broad tail acts as a propulsion tool.
