The Reign of King John
Our story begins in the year 1215 with of England. John has gone down in history as one of England's worst monarchs—you might actually know him as the greedy, thumb-sucking prince from the Robin Hood stories.
He ruled with a philosophy called vis et voluntas, which literally translates to "force and will." This meant he believed he was completely above the law and could make arbitrary decisions just because he was the king.
To make matters worse, John was terrible at warfare. He lost almost all of England's ancestral lands in France. To fund these disastrous military campaigns, he began squeezing his subjects for money, raising taxes on his wealthy nobles (known as ) to outrageous levels. If they couldn't pay, he would seize their lands, take their family members hostage, or throw them in prison without a trial.
