Deep Beneath the Surface

Why is the inner core solid if it's so hot?
That is one of the most fascinating paradoxes in geology! It feels completely counterintuitive that a ball of iron and nickel, scorching at temperatures comparable to the surface of the sun, could remain solid while the cooler outer core surrounding it is a liquid ocean.
The secret lies in a relentless cosmic tug-of-war between temperature and . While the extreme heat tries to melt the metals by making their atoms vibrate and break apart, the crushing weight of the entire planet pressing down from above does the exact opposite.

This colossal pressure literally squeezes the iron and nickel atoms so tightly together that they are physically locked into a solid lattice, unable to flow. It is like trying to run through an incredibly packed crowd—there is just no room to move, so everyone is forced to stand still.
