What Was the Industrial Revolution?

Before the mid-18th century, almost everyone on Earth lived an agrarian lifestyle. If you wanted a shirt, someone had to shear a sheep, spin the wool into yarn by hand on a simple wheel, and weave it on a wooden loom in their own cottage. It was slow, expensive, and limited by physical muscle power. But between roughly 1760 and 1840, a dramatic shift occurred. The changed everything by introducing machinery that could do the work of dozens of people in a fraction of the time. Instead of making goods individually at home, people began gathering in massive, specialized buildings to oversee machines. This birth of the forever altered where humans lived, how they worked, and how they perceived time.

It is no coincidence that the spark of modern industrialization caught fire on a modestly sized island. Great Britain had a unique combination of geological lottery winnings, global trade dominance, and social structures that made it the perfect launchpad for this transformation.
