But before we look at what it is, we have to clear up the single biggest misconception about it: despite its flashy name, the Big Bang was not an explosion in space. Instead, it was a sudden, rapid expansion of space itself. Think of it like the fabric of a balloon stretching outward. Rather than material bursting out into an empty room, the "room" itself has been expanding and stretching in all directions.
