What is Genetics?

At its simplest, is the scientific study of how traits — everything from the color of your eyes to how your body processes food — are passed down from parents to their children. It is the study of biological inheritance. Understanding this field is not just about satisfying curiosity; it is a cornerstone of modern medicine, helping us predict, diagnose, and treat diseases with incredible precision.

Inside almost every cell of your body, there is a long, winding molecule called Deoxyribonucleic acid. It is shaped like a twisted ladder, which scientists call a double helix. The rungs of this ladder are built from four basic chemical building blocks. The unique order of these blocks forms a code that spells out the instructions for everything your body needs to grow, function, and stay healthy.
