What Are Ocean Currents?

At their simplest, ocean currents are continuous, predictable movements of seawater flowing through the ocean. You can think of them like massive, underwater rivers flowing within the ocean itself.
These currents split into two main categories depending on where they happen:
  1. Surface currents: These control the top 10% of the ocean's water, driven mainly by global wind patterns.
  2. Deep-ocean currents: These mobilize the remaining 90% of the water deep below, driven by differences in water density.
