His big break came when he moved to Nairobi and caught the attention of Cleophas Asego—better known as —the co-founder of the legendary . Clemmo recognized his raw talent for writing relatable, funny verses and signed him to the label, which was the undisputed epicentre of the blossoming Genge scene.
It was at Calif Records that he officially took on the moniker Mejja. He burst onto the national stage in 2008 with his massive breakout single, "Jana Kuliendaje" (Sheng for "How did yesterday go?"). The song was an instant classic because it perfectly captured a hilarious, highly relatable scenario: waking up after a wild night out with zero memory of how you got home, empty pockets, and a massive headache. It proved right away that Mejja wasn't just a rapper; he was a master comedic storyteller.
