We are going to start right at the beginning: understanding exactly what a fraction is. Think of a fraction as a way to show a . It is what we use when we have something that is cut up into equal, fair pieces.

Take a look at the pizza diagram above. If we slice a pizza into 4 equal pieces, and we have 3 of those pieces left, we are looking at a fraction of the pizza. To write this down as a number, we use two parts separated by a line: a top number and a bottom number.
