Who is Bruno Latour?

Let's start by introducing , a French philosopher and sociologist who became one of the primary figures in a field known as Science and Technology Studies (STS). Instead of studying science by just looking at finished textbooks and theories, Latour decided to study science in action. He famously went into scientific laboratories and observed scientists the same way an anthropologist might study a newly discovered tribe. What he found completely disrupted our traditional ideas of how scientific facts are made.

Now we are getting to the absolute core of Latour's project. To understand his challenge, we first have to look at the traditional, binary way of viewing the world that most of us carry around without even realizing it.

Historically, modern thought has split the universe into two completely separate kingdoms.

On one side, we have Nature. This is the realm of objective, material, cold hard facts. It is the domain of rocks, gravity, chemical elements, and viruses. It is "out there," completely independent of what humans think or feel.

On the other side, we have Society (or Culture). This is the realm of subjective, human experience. It is the domain of politics, art, values, language, and power struggles. It is entirely constructed by us.

In this traditional view, the job of a scientist is to step completely out of the messy human realm of "Society" and peer through a window into the pristine, objective realm of "Nature" to report back on what is happening. We treat these two spheres as if they are separated by a massive, impenetrable firewall.

This rigid division between the natural and the social is what philosophers call a of nature.

We act as though human politics cannot infect scientific facts, and as though natural facts are completely separate from human values.

Latour's entire philosophy is a giant, sledgehammer blow to this firewall. He argues that this neat division is not a description of how the world actually works—it is an artificial illusion.

Exactly! Latour's big argument is that if we look closely at how science actually happens, we see that the split between a pristine "Nature" and a subjective "Society" is a complete myth. In reality, scientific facts are not found waiting under rocks in some untouched wild. They are painstakingly constructed through a mix of human and non-human elements. To prove this, Latour points out that we never deal with pure Nature or pure Society. Instead, we live in a world of . Think of a major contemporary scientific issue like climate change. Is it a purely "natural" phenomenon? No, because it is caused by industrial capitalism, fossil fuel politics, and consumer habits. Is it a purely "social" phenomenon? No, because it involves real carbon dioxide molecules, shifting ocean currents, and melting glaciers. It is a massive, tangled hybrid of both. By pretending that science only deals with Nature and politics only deals with Society, we blind ourselves to how the world actually works. Latour argues that the "modern" project is built on this very blindness.

In his landmark 1991 book, , Latour drops a conceptual bombshell: the entire idea of being "modern" is a historical illusion. To be "modern," according to the traditional story, means that we have successfully separated human culture from objective nature. We like to think that we have left behind the "primitive" past where people mixed up politics, religion, and natural phenomena (like blaming a thunderstorm on an angry god). But Latour points out a deep irony. While we claim to keep nature and society completely purified in separate compartments, our civilization actually excels at producing massive, deeply intertwined networks—like global telecommunications, synthetic biology, and industrial climate change. We have never actually achieved the separation we brag about. We talk like moderns who keep facts and values apart, but we act like non-moderns who constantly mix them together.
It is critical to note that Latour is not a postmodernist claiming that reality is just a figment of our imagination or that scientific facts are fake. He is saying that facts are incredibly real, but they are constructed through painstaking networks of equipment, laboratories, institutions, and politics. They do not exist as pure, untouched "Nature" waiting to be found; they are built. Now that we have dismantled this false binary, we can see why we need a new tool to map these real-world hybrids. That is where his most famous framework, Actor-Network Theory, comes in.
