The Core Mission: Orderly Separation

At its absolute core, (ATC) exists to do two things: prevent aircraft from hitting each other and keep the flow of traffic moving efficiently. To do this, controllers rely heavily on the concept of separation. Think of separation as a protective, invisible bubble of empty airspace that ATC maintains around every aircraft. Under (IFR), controllers use radar and precise standards to ensure aircraft keep a safe buffer from one another—whether that is a few miles horizontally or 1,000 feet vertically.
