- Spike Marks: We place colored tape (spike tape) on the stage deck to mark the exact locations where furniture or scenic flats must sit during different scenes.
- Absolute Silence: There is absolutely no talking in the wings during a performance. Technicians communicate using standardized hand signals or over quiet, disciplined headset loops. If a physical error occurs backstage, the crew must remain calm, communicate the issue to the Stage Manager over headsets, and coordinate a safe, rapid solution.

Section 1: The Anatomy of a Safe, Coordinated Strike
The final performance has ended, and now we must execute a Theatrical Strike. Far from a chaotic free-for-all, a strike is a highly coordinated, safety-critical deconstruction operation. We follow a strict teardown sequence:
- Props and Lighting First: All delicate props, costumes, and sensitive electronic lighting fixtures are wrapped, packed, and stored away to protect them from flying dust.
- Flying and Rigged Elements Second: Suspended scenery is carefully lowered and unrigged.
- Heavy Scenic Deconstruction Last: Platform decks are unscrewed, flat frames are disassembled, and hardware is sorted.
Our goal during strike is maximum material salvage. We carefully back out screws, remove fasteners, and sort raw timber into our storage racks for reuse in future productions. This teaches us environmental and financial responsibility. During deconstruction, PPE is still mandatory—including work gloves and safety glasses—to protect against splinters, flying drywall screws, and falling debris.
Section 2: Constructing and Defending a Design Portfolio
Now that the set is dismantled, we transition into academic reflection. To succeed in the professional industry or secure college admissions, a technician must compile a comprehensive Design and Technology Portfolio.
A professional portfolio is structured into four distinct sections to showcase your entire creative and technical process:
- The Concept (The "Why"): Your initial script breakdown sheet, historical research, and visual mood boards.
- The Paperwork (The "How"): Your scale draftings, CAD plans, light plots, sound cue sheets, or budget spreadsheets.
- The Process (The "Do"): Photos of you actively constructing the set, wiring sound systems, or painting scenic flats. Highlighting mistakes and write-ups of how you solved them is highly valued by reviewers!
- The Realization (The "Result"): High-quality production photos of your completed designs under live performance lighting, followed by a reflective post-mortem analysis.
During your final portfolio defense, you will present this archive to a panel of your peers, orally defending your technical decisions and articulating how your backstage labor directly served the dramatic storytelling on stage.
