Deconstructing Plant Communication

To understand how plants communicate, we first need to clear away a common misconception: plants do not have a , nor do they need one. Instead of relying on specialized neural networks, plants coordinate their entire bodies and interact with their neighbors using three distinct, overlapping signaling systems:
  • Biochemical signaling: The release of specialized liquid or airborne chemical compounds.
  • Electrical signaling: Rapid shifts in cellular membrane potential that travel across tissue.
  • Physical signaling: Real-time changes in internal fluid pressure and mechanical tension.

The Three Communication Domains

These three signaling systems operate across three highly distinct environmental scales, or "domains":
  1. Intra-organismic: Communication that happens strictly within a single plant (such as a root system telling the leaves upstairs that the soil is drying out).
  2. Inter-organismic: Communication between different individual plants, or between a plant and another species (like emitting airborne scents to summon predatory wasps to eat invading caterpillars).
  3. Meta-organismic: Highly intimate, multi-species communication networks, particularly the intricate chemical negotiations that take place underground between plant roots, soil bacteria, and vast fungal webs.
