The science of sleep

Welcome! I'm really excited to dive into the science of sleep with you. It's one of the most fascinating, active, and protective processes our bodies go through, yet so many of us take it for granted.

Before we start exploring the neural pathways and sleep cycles, I'd love to know what brings you here today. What specifically makes you curious about how sleep works, and how much of the basics do you already know?

I'm just curious and want to learn how it works from scratch!

It is wonderful to have you on board! Starting from absolute scratch is the best way to learn because we can build a rock-solid foundation without having to unlearn any common myths.

What Exactly is Sleep?

To kick off our journey, let's look at what sleep actually is. For a long time, people thought sleep was just a passive state, like turning off a computer at night. But modern science has shown us that sleep is actually a highly active, complex where your brain and body are busy doing essential maintenance work. Think of your body like a busy 24-hour restaurant. During the day, customers (your conscious thoughts and actions) crowd the dining room, making a mess. Sleep is the night shift. When the restaurant closes to customers, the cleanup crew comes in to scrub the floors, prep the kitchen, and restock the pantry so everything can run smoothly the next day.
