At its simplest level, a tan is the darkening of your skin color when it's exposed to (UV light), usually from the sun or a tanning bed.
While many people view a tan as a cosmetic glow, biologically speaking, it is actually your body's defensive response to protect itself from damage. When UV rays hit the skin, they trigger a series of chemical changes that darken the tissue.

While keratinocytes form the physical wall of your skin, melanocytes act like tiny defense factories. Located right in the basal (bottom) layer of the epidermis, their main job is producing the pigment melanin, which gives skin its color and absorbs incoming UV radiation.

Explain melanocytes with an analogy

Think of a melanocyte like an octopus sitting at the base of your outer skin layer.

Its central body produces pigment packages called melanosomes, and it uses long, branch-like arms called to reach out and deliver those packages directly into dozens of surrounding keratinocytes.
When UV rays hit your skin, they damage the DNA inside keratinocytes. This triggers a chemical distress signal that tells the melanocytes to ramp up production of melanin inside those melanosomes.
