The Shift to a Brain Disease Model

To understand addiction, we first have to address how we define it. Historically, society viewed addiction as a moral failing or a simple lack of willpower—a series of bad choices made by a weak-willed individual. Today, modern defines addiction as a chronic, relapsing brain disorder. It is characterized by compulsive substance seeking and use, despite harmful consequences.
Think of it like cardiovascular disease. A person might make lifestyle choices that contribute to heart disease, but once the cardiovascular system is altered, we recognize it as a medical condition requiring treatment, not a character flaw. Similarly, initial drug use is often a choice, but over time, physical changes in the brain override a person's self-control, turning voluntary behavior into an involuntary, compulsive drive.
