What sparked your interest in Leonardo, and how much do you already know about his life?

I'm fascinated by his inventions and scientific notebooks.

You have picked such an exciting place to start. Leonardo's notebooks are absolute treasure troves of genius, packed with everything from anatomical sketches to futuristic flying machines. But to understand how his brilliant mind worked, we have to look at how it all began—which actually started with a major childhood "disadvantage."

Born Out of Wedlock

Leonardo was born in 1452 in the tiny Tuscan hill town of Vinci. He was the of a wealthy Florentine notary, Ser Piero, and a local peasant woman named Caterina. Under the strict laws of the Renaissance, this meant Leonardo was legally barred from entering his father's noble profession. He could not become a notary, a lawyer, or attend any of the formal "Latin schools" that educated the era's upper class.
Because he was shut out of traditional schools, the young Leonardo spent his days wandering the wild Tuscan countryside. He didn't study dusty Greek textbooks; instead, he studied the real world. He filled his early days watching the flight patterns of dragonflies, analyzing the swirling currents of local streams, and sketching the geometry of wildflowers. This hands-on curiosity became the foundation of his entire life's work.

That is the perfect next step! At around age 14 or 15, Leonardo's father recognized his talent and secured him an apprenticeship in Florence under the legendary . This wasn't just an art studio; it was an intellectual and practical powerhouse.
Verrocchio's workshop was the ultimate playground for an interdisciplinary mind. In Renaissance Florence, an artist didn't just paint. Leonardo had to learn chemistry to mix pigments, metallurgy and draftsmanship for casting massive bronze statues, and geometry to master the newly popular technique of linear perspective. This is exactly where Leonardo realized that art and science weren't two different subjects—they were just different ways of looking at the same world.
There is a famous legend from this time about a collaborative painting called The Baptism of Christ. Verrocchio had Leonardo paint just one angel in the corner. When Verrocchio saw the breathtaking, lifelike quality of Leonardo's angel, he was supposedly so humbled by his student's superior skill that he vowed never to touch a paintbrush again.
