The skeletal system is the internal frame that gives your body its shape. Without it, you'd be a shapeless pile of organs and skin. But it does far more than just hold you up. Think of it as a multi-purpose structure: it provides support, protects your delicate organs, and works with your muscles to let you move.
Your skull, for instance, is a helmet for your brain. Your rib cage acts like a shield for your heart and lungs. Beyond protection, your skeleton is also a living warehouse. Bones store important minerals, like calcium, releasing them into the bloodstream when your body needs them. Deep inside certain bones, a substance called bone marrow is busy producing new red and white blood cells.
The skeletal system is a dynamic combination of support, protection, movement, and production.
More Than Just Bones
When we think of the skeleton, we usually just picture bones. While bones are the main players, they don't work alone. The skeletal system is a team effort, made up of bones, cartilage, and ligaments.

A System of Two Parts
The human skeleton, which consists of 206 bones in adults, is organized into two main divisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton.
The axial skeleton forms the central axis of the body. It includes the skull, the vertebral column (your spine), and the rib cage. Its main job is to protect your most vital organs: the brain, spinal cord, heart, and lungs. It's the core to which everything else attaches.
The appendicular skeleton consists of all the bones that are appended, or attached, to the axial skeleton. This includes the bones of your arms and legs, as well as the shoulder and pelvic girdles that connect them to the central frame. This part of the skeleton is all about movement, allowing you to walk, run, and interact with the world around you.
