The history of animation

Welcome! I am so excited to dive into the rich, magical story of how animation evolved from simple parlor tricks into a massive global art form.

Before we start looking at the early devices and optical toys that made pictures come to life, I would love to know a little more about your own relationship with animation so I can tailor our journey.

I am a complete beginner, but I love classic Disney and Pixar movies!

It is wonderful to have you here! Since you love classic Disney and Pixar, you are already familiar with the absolute peak of this art form. But long before Woody, Buzz, or Mickey Mouse ever graced a screen, animation started as a series of simple parlor tricks and optical toys designed to fool the human eye.

What is Animation?

At its most basic level, animation is the method of creating the by rapidly displaying a series of still images that differ from each other only slightly. Our brains are actually very easy to trick. When we look at a sequence of static images flashing by at a high speed, our eyes and brain don't perceive them as individual pictures. Instead, they seamlessly blend the images together into a single, continuous moving scene.

How fast do the pictures need to change?

To trick our brains into seeing smooth, fluid movement, the pictures actually have to change remarkably fast.

The Magic of Frame Rates

In modern animation and film, the standard speed is 24 frames per second (or fps). This means that in just one second, 24 individual, static images flash before your eyes. At this speed, the illusion of motion is virtually seamless to the human brain. However, long before we had cameras or projectors capable of hitting those speeds, 19th-century inventors discovered they could achieve a surprisingly convincing illusion of movement with far fewer frames—often as few as 8 to 16 images! They did this using simple, hand-operated optical toys. These relied heavily on the brain's natural tendency to bridge the physical gaps between rapidly presented pictures.
Let's take a look at one of the very earliest and simplest of these optical toys: the Thaumatrope. Invented in the 1820s, it consists of a small disc with a different drawing on each side—for example, a bare tree branch on one side and a bird on the other. When you spin the disc rapidly by tugging on its attached strings, the two images merge into one single image of a bird sitting on a branch! The Thaumatrope only blends two static images together, but it laid the conceptual groundwork for devices that could handle larger sequences of drawings, like the spinning Zoetrope.

The Spinning Wheels of Motion

While the Thaumatrope was fun, inventors quickly realized they needed more than just two frames to tell a real story. To solve this, they created the and the . These devices used a sequence of drawings printed around a spinning wheel or inside a drum.

These devices created short, endless loops of motion. A little later, in 1868, the hand-held was patented, letting people enjoy sequential animations without any bulky spinning machinery at all by simply flipping pages with their thumbs.
