Before this explosion of change, France was ruled by an absolute monarch, meaning King Louis XVI had total, unchecked control. But by the end of this decade-long upheaval, the monarchy was completely shattered, the king had lost his head, and France had transitioned into its very first republic.

This wasn't a smooth transition, though. The old order didn't just quietly fade away; it was torn down by ordinary citizens who were pushed to their absolute limits. It was a time of immense hope, radical ideas of human rights, and, unfortunately, extreme violence, culminating in the rise of a brilliant and ambitious military general you've probably heard of: Napoleon Bonaparte.
