What Was the Enlightenment?

To understand how the modern world was made, we have to travel back to a time of massive transition. The —often called the Age of Reason—was a vibrant intellectual and cultural movement that took place roughly between 1685 and 1815.

Before this era, if people wanted to know how the universe worked or how society should be run, they turned almost entirely to religious dogma, ancient rulers, and royal decrees. But during these decades, a powerful new idea took hold: humanity could use reason, logic, and scientific inquiry to solve its own problems and understand the world.
