Introduction to Screenwriting

The Blueprint for a Movie

A screenplay, or script, is the starting point for almost every movie, television show, or play you've ever seen. It’s more than just a story with dialogue; it’s a detailed blueprint that tells a story in pictures and sound. The screenwriter is the architect of that story, creating the world, characters, and events that will eventually appear on screen.

Think of a script as the instruction manual for a visual story. It provides the essential information for hundreds of people—directors, actors, designers, and cinematographers—to work together and create a single, cohesive piece of art.

The screenwriter's job is to translate the movie they see in their head onto the page. They decide what the audience sees, what they hear, and what the characters say and do. While the writer is the first creator, filmmaking is a deeply collaborative process. The script is the foundational document that guides the entire team, ensuring everyone is building the same movie.

The Building Blocks of a Script

To make collaboration easy, screenplays follow a standardized format. This isn't just about making the page look neat; the specific layout helps producers and directors estimate screen time. A properly formatted script page generally equals about one minute of screen time.

Every script is built from a few basic components.

ComponentPurpose
Scene HeadingTells us the location (interior/exterior) and time of day.
Action LineDescribes what is happening on screen and what we hear. Always written in the present tense.
Character NameIndicates who is speaking. It appears in all caps above their dialogue.
DialogueThe words the character speaks.

Let's look at how these elements come together on the page.

In the example above, you can clearly see the scene heading setting the location, the action lines describing the character's movements, and the dialogue between characters. This specific structure allows anyone to read the script and instantly understand the scene's setting, action, and what is being said. Mastering these basics is the first step to writing a compelling visual story.
